What is wearable art?
Throughout the centuries man and woman-kind have striven to express themselves in art by making functional things beautiful (an ornately carved window) and beautiful things functional (mother-of-pearl shell made into buttons).
Sometimes art stands alone to be admired for its own sake--a painting on a wall or sculpture--for viewers to come and enjoy.
Whether functional, beautiful or both, wearable art uses the human body as a canvas and makes the art portable for the enjoyment of both the wearer and viewer. Wearable art attracts others and invites viewers into the circle of our being. Wearable art further expresses what we wish to say about ourselves, even if the artist is not ourselves. Clothing, jewelry, tattoos and paint have all been used by people to make statements such as "I belong to this tribe" or "I am a special person of rank".
What does your wearable art say about you?
